Whether you’re making something for a loved one or for yourself, this workshop offers a fun and sustainable way to craft heartfelt keepsakes. Perfect for beginners and experienced stitchers alike, you’ll have access to whimsical, playful, and lovey-dovey templates like hearts, roses, and love-themed quotes to inspire your designs. February 19th - Martaki Bracelets
In this workshop we will learn about the practice of creating Martaki bracelets, an ancient custom for the beginning of Spring. Derived from the Greek word for the month of March, “Martios”, it is a tradition to create and wear a bracelet made of twisted white and red thread for the entire month. Beginning on March 1st, the bracelet is worn until the last day of March or until it falls off. After taking off the bracelet, it is hung on a fruit tree so the tree remains healthy and productive. Come make bracelets for yourself and some extra ones for gifts!
February 26th - Ink Marbling on Paper
Ever wondered how to achieve the swirling marbled patterns on decorative paper? Come try ink marbling on paper yourself and create your own unique designs with a selection of different inks. We'll use traditional “Suminigashi” black ink and colored alcohol inks to make designs on water and then transfer the images onto paper. No previous experience required. The finished products are perfect for book binding, making notecards, collage, scrapbooking, and even displaying on their own!
March 5th - Knitting 101
Ever wanted to learn how to knit in a fun, low-stakes environment? We'll be using UpCycle's fun and unique collection of donated yarns and needles to learn how to cast on, form the basic stitches, and create a basis for the wealth of possibilities knitting offers! No matter whether you've tried knitting before or never picked up a set of needles, please join us for a fun and relaxing evening and learn something new!
March 12th - Needle Felting
Needle felting involves sculpting shapes and figures in wool using special barbed needles. What you make is in your hands. Will you make an ornament? Or maybe your favorite little critter? In this workshop, we'll learn how to turn soft and formless secondhand wool from UpCycle's unique collection into anything we can think of!
NEW!! March 19th - Art Therapy: Neurographic Drawing - $20
Neurographic art combines art and mindfulness with a focus on being in the present moment. Starting with a short meditation, we'll use markers and upcycled inks to follow our intuitions and work through our emotions. We'll use this mindful art making technique as a tool for emotional regulation and dealing with problem solving and stress.
