Alexandria City Public Schools Outreach

By participating in UpCycle’s creative reuse programs, students develop foundational motor and communication skills, and they learn to create art with reuse materials and how to manage waste at school and at home.

Our programs support Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning and Virginia Science and Visual Arts Standards of Learning in an instructional environment that is innovative and fun!

School-based programs include:
  • Preschool: UpCycle Center Days
  • Kindergarten: UpCycled Mixed Media Portraits: Exploring and Creating with Reuse Materials

The impact of UpCycle's school-based programs is:
  • Increased percentages of children who independently engage in creative reuse activities at home.
  • Children expressing positive feelings about participating in creative reuse activities.
  • Increased proportions of instructional materials in classrooms that are reuse oriented.

UpCycle imagines a community where everyone has the opportunity to experience the fun and benefits of art exploration, and works collectively to reduce waste and repurpose unwanted materials. We invite you to join us in this important community project.

Donate to fund future Alexandria school outreach.
UpCycle's outreach is made possible by the generous support from the following agencies, organizations and businesses.

Funding for preschool UpCycle Center Days in 14 classrooms at Jefferson-Houston and John Adams Elementary Schools was provided by a Covanta Waste-to-Energy Community Grant and the Alexandria Rotary Club's Day Home Nursery Fund.

Funding for kindergarten UpCycled Mixed Media Portraits: Exploring and Creating with Reuse Materials in 30 classrooms at Charles Barrett, Cora Kelly, Jefferson-Houston, John Adams, Matthew Maury, Patrick Henry and William Ramsay Elementary Schools was provided by a Covanta Waste-to-Energy Community Grant and a Virginia Commission for the Arts - Artists in Education Grant.

Annual Teacher Memberships to UpCycle's Materials Resource Center were provided for 28 ACPS Preschool Teachers by ACT for Alexandria Donor Advised Fund Grantors.
