Do you know UpCycle Creative Reuse Center? We're a one-of-a-kind nonprofit located right here in Alexandria! We connect creativity and conservation through creative reuse.
How do we do it? Well, in the past year: UpCycle collected more than 50 truckloads of materials for art, learning and business purposes that were destined for the waste stream. Then, we went to work redistributing it to the community. We collect, reuse and redistribute materials through our materials resource center which is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday in the Durant Arts Center. UpCycle shared the joy of creative reuse with the Alexandria community and beyond. We brought science and arts integrated lessons to preschool and kindergarten classrooms; created reuse watercolor paintings at Art on the Avenue; encouraged adults to get creative with workshops; and much more! Participants in our activities discover that cast-offs like bottle caps, bread ties and fabric scraps are an inspiring resource for learning and inspiration. In December, we’ll be hosting our Annual Gingerbread House Decorating Party – our biggest fundraiser of the year. We anticipate over 400 guests will attend and decorate more than 200 gingerbread houses with reclaimed Halloween candy.
