Shop Assistant
UpCycle Creative Reuse Center is a materials resource center and a creative making space that encourages creativity, critical thinking, innovation and environmentally sustainable behavior – one of its kind in Northern Virginia. At UpCycle, we help the community rethink the notion of waste, collecting donations from residents and businesses to serve as creative art materials.
UpCycle is seeking to fill a part-time Shop Staff position and this person will report to the Store Manager. This position is responsible for working in the UpCycle shop and handling all aspects of the customers’ experience. The Shop Staff position is an hourly position. Currently this person is scheduled to work 12 hours per week on Wednesday and Saturday, however, as restrictions due to COVID ease or are lifted, this position has the potential for additional hours and pay per week.

Responsibilities
- Open and close the shop following procedures of the Durant Arts Center where the shop is located
- Check in shop customers observing protocols needed during COVID, e.g., check temperatures, guarantee customers wear face masks
- Orient new customers to the shop inventory and layout
- Check out customers using the Square software, e.g., cash and credit card purchases, number of bags of materials ‘purchased’ by UpCycle members
- Balance the cash box at the end of every day
- Integrate donations into the shop inventory
- Answer the UpCycle phone while the shop is open and handle any phone messages
- Keep the shop tidy
Preferred Qualifications:
- Retail experience
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to work independently
- Undergo background checks, in accordance with local law/regulations

UpCycle is a non-profit that connects creativity and conservation by encouraging the community to
reuse materials for art and learning purposes. Our art programs for children and adults encourage
experimentation and exploration. Participants often learn new skills and processes that incorporate arts
media and reuse materials. We operate a materials resource center that is open to the public and
supplies our programs. Programs include Tinker Time, Materials Playgroup, summer camp, children and
adult workshops, in-school programs, field trips and birthday parties. Programming has been adjusted to
accommodate restrictions due to the pandemic.
UpCycle is hiring an Instructional Coordinator to manage the after-school programs, workshops, and
other programming. The most significant duty will include hiring and managing instructors for the
programs. Other duties include marketing of programs, scheduling, and organizing materials. With the
right skills and experience, the Instructional Coordinator may also teach classes and workshops. We’re
looking for an energetic person who is highly organized, has the ability to work independently and is
enthusiastic about educating the public about creative reuse!

- With the Executive Director, develop, coordinate, market, implement, and evaluate UpCycle’s programs and events
- Oversee program implementation at the materials resource center and off-site locations, such as schools and recreation centers
- Perform office operations like communicating with customers and participants, processing payments, obtaining liability waivers and photo/video releases, and creating class lists and sign-in sheets
- Teach and/or facilitate, set up and clean up programs as needed or required
- Recruit, hire, train, and manage contract teachers and volunteers
- Coordinate with Shop Manager to: maintain program materials and related storage areas in materials resource center; schedule, market, and communicate program information; and manage program sections of the website
- Implement and track grant-funded UpCyle programs
- Assist with sales, donations, and other duties in the materials resource center as required
- Experience teaching, planning and/or managing programs for children and/or adults in an educational setting
- Familiarity with some art processes and media, especially with regards to fostering creativity
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Experience with or the capacity to learn website editing and marketing technology
- Interest in creative reuse
