Store Manager
UpCycle Creative Reuse Center (www.upcyclecrc.org/) is a materials resource center and a creative making space that encourages creativity, critical thinking, innovation and environmentally sustainable behavior – one of its kind in Northern Virginia. At UpCycle, we help the community rethink the notion of waste, collecting donations from residents and businesses to serve as creative art materials. Our inventory of materials is affordable, dynamic and changes constantly, providing ever-changing inspiration and outlets for creativity. Materials are sold in the UpCycle shop, which is open to the public, and are used for numerous programs e.g., playgroups, workshops, Tinker Time, camps, after school programs and adult programs.
UpCycle is seeking a part-time Store Manager. This position will lead a small team, be responsible for managing and promoting the UpCycle shop and will report to the UpCycle Board. This position is an opportunity for a creative individual who is familiar with growing a small business through marketing and who also understands the retail environment. The Store Manager is an hourly position and will work 15 hours a week; the salary is $20 per hour. As shop sales increase, this position has the potential for additional hours and responsibilities.
Like many organizations, UpCycle has been affected greatly by COVID-19 and has discontinued all in-person programs temporarily. Until UpCycle can resume in-person activities, UpCycle is solely focusing on growing our business within the shop and providing materials (e.g., premade kits) to select partners.

Responsibilities
Shop Operations and Financial Management:
- Manage and retain paid and volunteer staff working in the shop including scheduling and payroll.
- Oversee donations and handling of all inventory.
- In concert with staff, review inventory regularly to maximize sales (e.g., priced as marked materials) and improve the shopping experience for customers.
- Manage the membership, appointment scheduling and sales software.
- Provide the Board Treasurer with relevant financial information.
Marketing and Communications:
- Provide marketing suggestions to the Board for increasing shop sales, e.g., increasing sales and number of shoppers.
- Create and post content for social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram); develop and distribute e-newsletters and emails designed to attract new customers as well as update existing customers.
- Explore opportunities to collect and analyze feedback from customers and their experience with UpCycle, e.g., how did the customer learn about UpCycle, whether the customer able to find everything she/he needed.
- Communicate effectively with Board members on select committees so the Board can make timely and well-informed decisions.
Required Qualifications:
- College degree or equivalent management experience
- Marketing experience in growing a small business
- Ability to work independently and remotely, as needed
- Undergo background checks, in accordance with local law/regulations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Retail management experience a plus
- Nonprofit experience a plus

Ideal candidates:
- Love working in a fast-paced environment, with many varied duties and responsibilities!
- Have a facility with technology – editing web pages, doing simple design work, send email through Mailchimp, and work with Square
- Have experience working with art processes and media; and children ages 3-12 years old and/or adults (not necessary but would be great!!)
Program Coordinator Duties and Responsibilities:
- With the Executive Director, develop, coordinate and communicate about UpCycle’s classes, camps and workshops
- Work on implementing and tracking grant-funded UpCycle’s programs
- Oversee the operation of UpCycle’s programs, including camps in the summer
- Help with Center organization and marketing on all platforms – electronic and print
- Participate in hiring and supervising teachers
- Set up and clean-up programs (must be able to lift and move tables)
- Office operations (communicate with customers and participants, obtain liability waivers and photo/video releases, create class lists and sign-in sheets)
- Schedule and market studio workshops for scouts, adults, playgroup sessions, field trips, birthday parties and professional workshops

To provide learning activities appropriate to the age of students with conservation materials in order to develop abilities for creative expression, problem solving skills, and knowledge of recycling and reusing materials
