We were amazed by the children's work on their sewing projects this week, and they seemed equally satisfied with their results. The sewing project had many steps: sketching animals, drawing a plan, making a pattern, cutting fabric to match the pattern, and finally sewing. Sewing is not an easy task. Pinching and applying pressure to the needle to get it through the upholstery sample, and then pulling the needle through without losing the thread was challenging. Everyone seemed up for the challenge, and they referenced their patterns frequently as they sewed. Many friends added embellishments like buttons and beads, and many were interested in trying different stitches. You will see running and couching stitches as well as French knots in their work. Here are the final products with the child's ideas next to his or her work: Our sculptures were fun to create and it was tough to come to a stopping place. Many boys used their sculptures in pretend play during exploration time; we had robot battles before they ventured home. There's a story behind every sculpture, and here are a few for your enjoyment:
Finally, we drew our sculptures and painted the drawings with water color paint. And, we had fun with our crazy looms. Thanks for a wonderful week!
