UpCycle provides teacher professional development training to encourage the incorporation of arts media and open-ended reuse items in classrooms. Topics include:
Intro to UpCycling with Young Learners: Workshop participants will learn how to collect, store and display a wide array of reusable materials that young children can use to explore and communicate their understanding of the world. The presentation will highlight the benefits of including open-ended materials in the classroom and provide innovative, yet practical, ideas for using them with young children. We start with describing core skills and experiences that younger children should have, and then show how they lay the foundation for facilitated group and self-directed work in later preschool years. (1 hour) Printmaking: From found object printing, to making print plates, to developing a printing process to use with children, many different printing techniques will be shared. (1 hour) Paper Cloth Experience: Paper cloth is a collage material that is part paper and part fabric. This unique and beautiful product can be used for sewing, bookbinding and more. (45 mins) Sewing: We will share a progression of skills that familiarize children with sewing--with real needles! We will demonstrate cooperative activities and individual experiences to make sewing successful and satisfying for all in involved. Participants will have hands-on experiences to learn our processes. (1 hour) Color Studies: From paint mixing to making your own liquid watercolor and exploring color mixing on an over head projector, we will share many different ways for children to experience color. (1 hour) We can also present clay, wire, mixed media collage, building up, and exploring light and shadow. Contact us at [email protected] for more information and to schedule a workshop.
